Service Description

An Exclusive Masterclass Led by Teacher Kwak Kyung Tae ■ Join us for an intensive 5-day masterclass with Teacher Kwak. Learn the traditional techniques of Korean Onggi making firsthand in a focused, engaging, and immersive format designed for pottery enthusiasts. Teacher Kwak and his two apprentices provide an excellent teacher-to-student ratio, offering personalized 1:1 guidance catering to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced potters. ■ This masterclass is ideal for those looking to work with clay at a large scale. It also suits experienced handbuilders wishing to acquire new skills, streamline workflow, or diversify techniques. You will learn ancient, efficient movements used by generations of Korean potters, deepening your connection with clay in a rewarding and enriching experience. ■ Key techniques and concepts will be covered in detail. Learn every stage, from understanding regional influences and clay preparation to traditional coiling (Taryeom-jil), paddling the form (Surae-jil), final shaping (Geun-gae-jil), rim finishing (Jeon-tae), decorative scribing, and the traditional cloth lifting method. Gain insight into Teacher Kwak's interpretation and how these traditional methods can inspire new ways of working. ■ Masterclass includes: – High-quality stoneware clay – A comprehensive Onggi tool set for each student (valued at $300, includes key wooden & metal tools) – Translation by Teacher Kwak’s apprentice – Access to basic communal tools – Coffee and tea available throughout the day ■ Please note: Firing service is not included in the masterclass fee. If you wish to fire your pieces, an additional fee based on size (3 cents per cubic inch) will apply.
